undoubtedly be the better man if the pay were sufficient
to tempt him, and I believe he has the special qualifica-
-tions of tact, decision and pertinacity which are special-
-ly required. He spoke favourably to me of Dr. Pearse, but
I am told that there has always been some
conflict of
opinion between them, and that this might make Dr. Clark
the more unwilling to prejudice his colleague's chances of
promotion.
